One of the more spectacular and hardest tattoo styles on earth is geometrical tattoo. And, I’m not going to lie, I do love this tattoo style and, in fact, I have one of them on my own skin.
And, you know, with this background, I have to write this guide. Here is the thing:
- First, I’m going to tell you a little more about Sacred Geometry.
- Secondly, about the meaning for the different shapes in geometric tattoos.
- And, of course, a lot of different designs for you.
What is a Geometric Tattoo?
Well, I’m going to be really short and sweet, because the definition is very simple:
A geometric tattoo is every tattoo with some geometric elements, like triangles, squares, hexagons or just lines in the correct way.
But, geometry has always been there for humans and, because of this, there are a lot of concepts in this area.

This is the first example of a geometric tattoo for all this guide, and I think it is just beautiful, isn’t it?

What is Sacred Geometry?
Sacred Geometry is something really odd, because there are a lot of different cultures and religions all around the globe.
Technically speaking, Sacred Geometry are some geometric patterns in two ways:
- Or they are in nature.
- Or some people believe they are sacred because they have some mysticism inside of these shapes.
And this different shapes are in Buddhism or Hinduism, but it is Greeks, Romans or Egyptians too.

There are a lot of different shapes in Sacred Geometry, but I want to show you just a few of them, let me know what do you think about it:
Metatron’s Cube, a Very Nice Naming for Almost Everything
Well, trying to explain Metatron’s Cube in a few words is hard work, but I’ll try.
Metatron’s Cube is just 13 circles connected with some lines, and the result is something like a 3D illusion.
The meaning of this shape is about divine protection, but for harmony and balance (and, moreover, for the balance of the tattoo artist that inks this to you!).
Metatron’s Cube was composed hundreds of years before Christ, and it’s called that way because an Archangel for the Jewish people, Metatron, who was an important guy in the creation of the universe.
Each circle is one sphere of the Tree of Life.
And this can be a very nice example of a Metatron’s Cube, a very bold design covering the chest from up to down, with a perfect linework and some shadowing.

Sri Yantra, The Hindu Symbol
We have the Sri Yantra symbol too, very used in Hinduism because the meaning is the union or connection between two divine energies: The masculine and the feminine ones.
There are just 9 triangles but put together they combine for a total of 43 smaller triangles and, just in the center of this composition, there is the bindu, the power point.
Other meanings for Sri Yantra are about enlightenment or spiritual awakening, and I think it’s beautiful.
And this is an example for a simple Sri Yantra tattoo, just the linework and some dotwork for the triangles lines.
As you can see, even on this simple tattoo, Sri Yantra is a hard design to get a perfect tattoo.
This one is done by Uriel Leon, another fantastic tattoo artist, this time, working in Ventura, California.
The Flower of Life, from Egyptians to Leonardo da Vinci
The Flower of Life is one of the most famous tattoos with Sacred Geometry you can have, because it was used from Ancient Egypt to Leonardo da Vinci in his studies.
As you can see below these lines, The Flower of Life is a circle pattern, with a lot of different overlapping circles, giving something like an illusion in your skin.
And, talking about the meaning, it represents unity and a very nice concept, that all life is interconnected.
A really nice one.
This is a very nice example for a Flower of Life tattoo, a very special one because this tattoo matches between the two forearms, and this is a hard thing to do!

The Fibonacci Spiral, One of the Numbers for Nature
If you draw a Fibonacci number series (you know, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, and so on) you are going to have a spiral, but a very beautiful one.
In fact, according to this Fibonacci spiral there are a lot of things growing in nature, from galaxies to flower petals or hurricanes.
For me, a number series repeating in all of these elements is just magic.
Talking about the meaning, the Fibonacci spiral is for expansion or for growth.

Yes, it is simple but beautiful, and very hard to do so clean and perfect.

Finally, The Golden Ratio, AKA Phi
The first human references for Phi number was back in Babilonia, in 1.900 BC.
And Phi number was like a holy grail for almost everything in maths or in physics, but in nature too.
Because there are a lot of different things with this Phi proportion.
Just a few examples should be sunflowers, spiral galaxies or human DNA.
Yes, you have read it well, and it’s amazing.
Talking about the meaning, Phi is for balance, about beauty, and about divine proportion.

Let’s move on into the most usual geometric shapes, because they have a meaning too!
What Is the Meaning of a Circle Tattoo?
This is a very nice one, because in almost every culture on earth they have circles, from China to the Native Americans.
And, in all the cultures, a circle is for infinity and life.
In fact, in Taoism, for example, the circle is to define the world and, another circle a little larger, the universe.
It is hard to find a simple circle tattoo for you, so I searched for a geometric one with a lot of circles and very nice work, like this one.
As you can see, this is a realistic Atlas tattoo with a lot of circles up and down his figure, done with mastery by Eijin, an incredible tattoo artist based in Edmonton, in Alberta, Canada, working at Tattoos by Strangers (nice name for a tattoo studio).
And What’s the Meaning for a Triangle in a Tattoo?
Let’s move to the 3 sides polygon, the triangle, of course.
A triangle in a geometric tattoo is about stability and balance, and that’s cool.
But, if you go to Asia, a triangle downward is for the water, and upward is for fire.
And here you can see something like a psychedelic geometric triangle tattoo, with a nice blackout work and pretty eye-catching in the forearm.

And I think it is a very nice idea, to be honest.
What About the Meaning for a Square?
Square, as a triangle, was a very used shape for Greeks and Romans, and it has another meaning.
Square usually is for strength and grounding so, if you want to show these features in you, a square is a nice thing to get inked with.
Finally, the Hexagon Meaning
Hexagon is a very nice shape to get tattooed with and, in geometric tattoos, hexagon is in a lot of designs.
And it’s a very nice thing, to be honest.
Hexagon meaning is for balance and harmony and, in fact, hexagon is very present in nature.

I do love fractals.
Maybe the definition is a little tricky, because a fractal is like a never ending pattern, each time more and more complex, it is like something without spikes, but the point is fractals are very beautiful.
And fractals have a beautiful meaning, because fractals are in all of nature, from the trees to the flowers, so it represents just life and nature.
And I love it.
And this is the perfect example of a fractal tattoo.
As you can see, a very intricate design with a lot of details and something like a never ending pattern, very organic and, in one word, remarkable.

I do love this tattoo because of the mix between the Flower of Life and the Metatron’s Cube in both arms, with this touch of color.
This stunning tattoo combines the perfect geometric work with some sketch lines to give the composition some thick lines and the very nice brush stroke feeling with the blue and red colors.
